Cover level

Vehicle based cover

Our standard breakdown service. Your vehicle is covered regardless of who is driving it. You can add vehicle based breakdown cover to your existing Aviva car insurance policy; simply log in to our self service facility.

Personal cover

The same cover as ‘vehicle based’ plus you will be covered in any car or van, whether you’re the driver or the passenger (non-commercial vehicles only, excluding certain vehicle types)

Joint personal cover

Provides the same cover as ‘Personal’ plus another named member of your household is covered while travelling in any car or van, whether as a driver or a passenger.

If your vehicle breaks down more than ¼ mile from your home address the RAC will send a patrol van out to repair it at the roadside. If it cannot be repaired within a reasonable time, the RAC will transport you and your vehicle to a nearby destination of your choice or to the nearest garage within 10 miles.

In addition to the cover detailed under Rescue, Recovery also includes:

Transportation of your vehicle to your home or a single address anywhere in the territory. Transport for you and up to seven passengers to the above chosen destination and, if you become ill whilst driving (provided that you are more than ¼ mile from your home address) and you are unable to continue, and none of your passengers can legally drive your car, the RAC arrange transport for you and up to seven passengers to any one address anywhere in the territory.

In addition to the cover detailed under Rescue and Recovery, At Home breakdown cover enables you to make a call out if you car breaks down at your home address or within ¼ mile of it.

Aviva breakdown cover: Onward travel… read more

In addition to the cover detailed under Rescue, Recovery and At Home, Onward Travel entitles you to one of the following extra benefits if the RAC cannot get your vehicle repaired locally or if you become medically unfit to drive during the course of your journey:

  • Replacement hire car for 24 hours, and insurance including damage waiver
  • Alternative transport for you and up to 7 passengers to your final destination.
  • Hotel accommodation — one night’s bed and breakfast for up to 8 people in a hotel of the RAC’s choice.
  • Special medical assistance — if you or one of your passengers is taken into hospital the RAC will pay for overnight accommodation for the other passengers.

Our services in Europe

Aviva breakdown cover: European

Whichever UK breakdown cover option you choose, for an additional fee you can extend it to cover driving in Europe. This cover includes:

  • Spare parts dispatch if they are required to repair your car whilst abroad
  • Extra accommodation expenses if you are stranded following a breakdown
  • Journey continuation or return home: the RAC will pay for car hire up to £125 per day up to a maximum of £1500, if your car cannot be repaired immediately
  • Replacement driver if you and your passengers are too ill to continue driving (must be certified by a doctor)
  • Vehicle break-in — the RAC will pay for repairs to make your car secure again following a break-in or attempted break-in whilst abroad
  • Returning your car to the UK if it cannot be repaired

As part of European breakdown cover, the RAC also include a number of features which apply after you return home:

  • Travel expenses to collect your vehicle that has been left abroad for repair
  • Replacement vehicle after you return: the RAC will pay for car hire up to £125 per day up to a maximum of £1500, if your car cannot be repaired immediately
