Got a question? We have the answers!

You can find the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions below. If you can't find what you are looking for here, you can ask us a question.

I don't know the registration number of this vehicle, can I still get a car insurance quote?

It is beneficial to have the registration number of the car, as we can usually generate your vehicle details (model, fuel and transmission type etc) from this.

However, if you don't know the registration number, just select "No" for this question. We will ask you to enter the year, make and model of your car and we'll provide a list of models to choose from. Please keep the description of the "Model" as simple as possible: eg "Focus", "Golf" or "Astra". This will ensure that we provide the full list of models for you to choose from.

If you are still unable to find your particular model, please contact our team on 0800 092 9561 and we'll be happy to help: your online discount will still be honoured.

Please be aware that if you don't know your registration details we can only give you a quote, you won't be able to take out the policy without this information.

Do I need to provide proof of my no claim discount to set up a car insurance policy with you?

We may ask you to provide proof of your no claim discount at any stage during the period of your insurance. This will usually take the form of a no claim discount entitlement letter on headed paper from your previous insurance company. We can also accept renewal invite letters/emails as proof of NCD.

If I have been a named driver on another car insurance policy, am I entitled to any no claim discount?

If you are a named driver on another Aviva policy then you can earn the equivalent of a no claim discount in your own right if you buy a car insurance policy with Aviva. The standard discount for named drivers is up to 40%, and if you are the spouse or partner of the policyholder then you could earn up to 70%; discount if you insure your car with us.

To enable us to calculate your discount, please don't complete an online car insurance quote. Call our expert advisers on 0800 056 2683 - you will still be eligible for an additional online discount.

What is protected no claim discount?

If you have built up 3 or more years no claim discount in your own name, then for an additional premium you may be able to protect it. This allows you to have up to two "at fault" claims in a 5 year period, and means that if your car is stolen, or there is no third party to claim from, you won't lose any of your hard-earned discount.

Now, if you have 5 years no claim discount or more, we can also offer the additional protection of guaranteed no claim discount: to ensure that you never lose it! As long as you've had no "at fault claims" in the last 3 years and all the named drivers are 21 or over, we guarantee that your premium will not increase in the future as the result of any claims: regardless of how many you make.

What is an "at fault" car insurance claim?

The term "at fault claim" does not relate to the cause of the incident, but to the policy from which the claim was paid. For example, if your car is stolen, or you are the victim of a bump in a car park and can't identify the culprit, then these incidents would be classed as "at fault" even though you were not responsible for the incident.

How do I make a claim on Aviva car insurance?

If you've had an accident, complete our online form or notify us of a car insurance claim on 0844 891 1111. The lines are open 24 hours a day, every day, and one of our expert incident managers will begin to process your claim straight away.

Don't forget - if you've got an iPhone, you can start your claim using our new app Aviva MyClaims.

Note: please report all accidents to us immediately so we can tell you what to do next and help resolve any claim on your behalf. Any communications you receive from another third party in relation to your claim should be re-directed to us.

What is the "excess" on a car insurance policy?

The "excess" is the contribution you pay in the event of a claim. At Aviva, we default your excess to £350 for online car insurance quotes, but you have the option to reduce this as low as £150 (for an additional premium), or increase it to lower your premium.

If a claim is not deemed to be at fault, it is usually possible to reclaim the excess paid from the third party involved.

A standard policy excess may also apply.

Can I get instant car insurance cover with Aviva?

Yes, then we we'll issue you with a policy number as soon as your payment is processed: meaning that you can drive your car straight away.

Also, you'll get instant access to all your policy documents online (this may take up to 30 minutes from point of purchase) and your certificate of insurance will be posted to you within ten working days.

Is it safe to use my credit or debit card to buy car insurance on your site?

Any personal information which you enter into our car insurance quote form is protected using SSL encryption technology, which works with your Internet browser to protect the data.

For a number of credit and debit cards we require a Card Security code (also known as CVV2 or Card Verification Value) which is a three digit number on the signature strip on the back of your card. You may also, depending on the card you have chosen to use, be asked during the payment process to provide a secure password (MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa) which provides extra protection from online fraud.
