Equipment: The Doctor’s Basic Equipment

Your doctor may use one or more basic pieces of equipment when performing a physical examination. Each has a specific function. Some instruments enable your doctor to examine certain parts of the body more closely. Others are used to listen for abnormal sounds or to check the reflexes.

Aids to examination

An ophthalmoscope and otoscope are used to look at eyes and ears. Reflexes are tested with a hammer, and sounds, such as the heartbeat, can be heard with a stethoscope.
