Process: Engagement

A few weeks before labour begins, the head of the fetus moves down to sit snugly in the pelvis. The head is then said to be engaged. In women who have given birth before, this process may not occur until labour begins.

In preparation for the birth, the fetus drops lower in the mother’s abdomen so that its head sits low in her pelvic cavity.
