Self-help: Coping with a Panic Attack

Rapid breathing in a panic attack reduces carbon dioxide levels in the blood and may cause tingling in the fingers. You can control these symptoms by breathing through the mouth into a paper bag. By doing this, you rebreathe air with more carbon dioxide and restore the body’s levels to normal.

Rebreathing from a bag

Breathe in and out slowly into a paper bag about 10 times and then breathe normally for 15 seconds. Continue until you no longer need to breathe rapidly.
