Self-help: Managing Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease

The following steps either relieve symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) or prevent them from recurring:

  • Take antacids to help neutralize stomach acids.

  • Avoid spicy, acidic, tomato-based foods and high-fat foods such as chocolate and cream.

  • Avoid alcohol, colas, and coffee.

  • Stop smoking.

  • Lose excess weight.

  • Eat smaller amounts of food to avoid overfilling the stomach and do not eat late at night.

  • After eating, do not exercise or lie down since both may lead to food being regurgitated.

  • Raise the head of your bed or sleep on extra pillows so that your head is higher than your feet during the night.
