Self-help: Preventing Vaginal Thrush

If you often have vaginal thrush, the following self-help measures may help to prevent further episodes of infection:

  • Wash the vaginal area with water only. Try to avoid using bath additives, perfumed soaps, or vaginal deodorants or douches, and do not wash inside the vagina.

  • Avoid spermicidal creams, lubricants, and latex condoms if you find they irritate the vagina.

  • Avoid scented sanitary towels or tampons, change tampons frequently, and use sanitary towels instead of tampons as often as possible.

  • Keep your external genital area clean, dry, and cool. Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes if possible.

  • If thrush seems to be triggered by stress, try to avoid stressful situations whenever possible.
