Self-help: Soothing a Sore Throat

A sore throat may be caused by pharyngitis, tonsillitis, or both. The following measures may help to relieve the discomfort:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially hot or very cold drinks.

  • Eat ice cream and ice lollies.

  • Gargle warm salt water.

  • Take painkillers, such as paracetamol, at the recommended dose.

  • Suck throat lozenges containing a local anaesthetic (these are only suitable for adults).

  • Install a humidifier or place bowls of water near radiators to keep the air moist.
