Setting: Special Care Baby Unit

Premature or ill babies need treatment and monitoring in a special care baby unit. The normal mechanisms that regulate breathing and body temperature may not be fully developed in a premature baby. A heater keeps the baby’s body at a constant temperature, and the baby may be attached to a ventilator if he or she needs assistance to breathe.

Baby care equipment

A sophisticated machine monitors each baby and closely controls his or her environment. Other equipment assists body functions or supplies drugs, fluids, and nutrients.
