The Gender Directive and PMI Mid Term Changes

Published: 18 Dec 2012

As a reminder, from the 21 December 2012 onwards the European Court of Justice has deemed it unlawful to use gender as a rating factor when determining premiums and/or policy benefits.

So any Aviva individual Private Medical Insurance quotes, where cover start date is the 6 November 2012 onwards will be gender neutrally priced.

What about mid term amendments?

You may now be wondering how Aviva will treat mid term changes (MTCs) aligned to the gender directive. Please take a moment to read the below so that you are fully aware of how this will impact your customer in each scenario.

  • When the policy is purchased before 6 November: Aviva will continue to use gender as part of our calculations for any change made until the policy is renewed.
  • When the policy is purchased on or after 6 November: These policies will be gender neutral so MTCs will be rated on a neutral basis.
  • When the policy renewal date is before 6 November: As the policy renewed before this date Aviva will continue to use gender as part of our calculations for any change made until the next renewal.
  • When the policy renewal date is on or after 6 November: These policies will be calculated on a gender neutral basis.

Renewal prices are influenced by other factors, so it is important to remember that any individual customer’s decrease or increase in premium may not necessarily be due to gender neutral pricing.
