Easy ways to keep your home healthy

Once you’ve moved into your new home, there are some simple and easy things you can do around the house to keep it in shape. Make a note of the checks and small jobs you can do around the year to make sure your home is fit and healthy.

Key:

Monthly

  • Check sealants around baths and showers are intact and not damaged
  • Look for damp stains around a chimney breast
  • Check for black mould growth on interior walls

Twice a year

  • Look on flat roofs (e.g. on garages or extensions) for signs of any standing water, cracking of the felt, hardening of any sealants
  • Check for damp patches or salty deposits on outside walls

Yearly

  • Check any wood structures or timber frames for signs of rot
  • Check any wood structures or timber frames for signs of wood-boring beetles (summer)
  • Check your garden for signs of Japanese Knotweed (summer)
  • Remove any debris or leaves from external guttering
