Semi-grating to work abroad

Many people consider 'semi-gration'. It's the name we use to describe a period of time spent working abroad which stops short of full emigration, typically 1-3 years. When we surveyed 1,500 UK workers aged 18 - 45 in March 2010, 50% said they'd thought about moving overseas for employment.

  • A quarter of the people we spoke to didn't know what state-funded healthcare they could claim in other countries
  • 41% wrongly believed that, as a UK citizen, they would automatically get state-funded healthcare within the EU and Commonwealth
  • …yet 31% said they wouldn't think about taking out additional health insurance
