What is a Stocks and Shares ISA?

A Stocks and Shares ISA can be a tax-efficient way of investing, whether you're looking for regular income or capital growth.

  • You won't pay tax on any increase in the value of your investment or on any withdrawals.
  • Your investment goes into a range of assets such as shares, property or fixed interest investments.
  • In 2009/2010 tax year you can invest up to a maximum of £7,200 in a Stocks and Shares ISA.
  • From 6 October 2009, the limits will increase for people aged 50 and over, or who turn 50 before the end of the current tax year (5 April 2010). For everyone else the limit will increase in 2010 at the start of the next tax year. If you are aged over 18 you will be able to invest up to £10,200 in a Stocks and Shares ISA.

Features and Flexibility

  • The value of your investment can go down as well as up and the value is not guaranteed.
  • A Stocks and Shares ISA should be regarded as a long-term investment.
  • You can invest single and monthly payments.
  • You can change the amounts of your monthly payments.
  • You can stop paying into your account at any time (subject to leaving at least £500 in value to keep it open).

A Stocks and Shares ISA might be right for you if you want to invest some money for the long term, at least five years. You want to invest in the stock market for the potential of higher returns and you accept taking some risk with your capital for potential higher gain.
