Now it's official - home is where the happiness is

Article date: 28 July 2005

The ‘Quote Me Happy’ insurance peopleNorwich Union have come up with some amazing facts regarding theway we feel about happiness and home-life.

In a nationwide survey in which 2000 men and womenwere asked whether they considered their home to be happy, nearlyall respondents said yes. North Easterners proved themselves amongthe happiest of all with a rating of 96%. Quite why the Geordiesare so cheerful is hard to say: it’s unlikely to be becausethey came 14th in the Premiership last season, and itsurely can’t be the weather.

However, least happy are the Moaning Minnies ofLondon, where only 84% think their home is a happy one, with 16%claiming it isn’t. The rest of the supposedly prosperousSouth East aren’t far behind in the misery stakes either.

Fiona Somerton-Edwards, of Norwich Union, explained: "Our‘Quote Me Happy’ insurance campaign has really caughtthe public’s imagination this year, so we thought we’dfind out how happy people really felt about their home-life. Theresults make fascinating reading which will certainly influence theway we communicate." And the happiest time of year? "Summer, definitely, closely followed by Christmas."

Norwich Union is keen to find out who has ‘Britain’sHappiest Home’ with the launch of an online competition. Fora chance to win, log on to www.norwichunion.combetween 7 July and 31 October to enter the ‘HappyHomes’ competition. The winner will receive an £8000 prize(cash or vouchers) in order to help make their happy home a dreamhome, with 20 runners-up obtaining a £100 prize.

The overwhelming spirit of happiness from thesurvey might not be shared by one major category of consumers– the nation’s 20 million domestic pets who, itappears, might only be second or third choice to be rescued in theevent of a fire.

In Scotland, certainly, Tiddles the cat is goingto have to look after herself, while her male owner rushes to grabhis family photo albums and wallet before his thoughts turn tosaving his furry friend.
