Extra opportunist thefts

Extra opportunist thefts

At last, Spring has sprung and the prospect of lighter evenings means everyone can look forward to spending more time outdoors. And if you’re a keen gardener, no doubt you’ll be preparing to get stuck into all those post winter jobs from hedge trimming and mowing to maintenance and repairs.

Sadly, when the clocks go forward we also tend to see an increase in garden and outbuilding thefts as burglars often take advantage of the extra daylight. If not locked away or hidden from view, all your expensive power tools, bikes and children’s toys are more visible to passing criminals.

Power tools are frequently the top pick but thieves will go for anything within easy reach, including children’s toys and bikes and even simple hand tools like spades, shovels, rakes and forks. So try not to advertise what you've got. After a day in the garden or a bit of DIY, secure everything away inside your home, shed or garage. Make sure sheds and summerhouses are properly secured and clear up your garden every evening so there is nothing lying around that could tempt an opportunist thief on to your property.

And bear in mind that loose items like ladders and wheelie bins are perfect for burglars to use to get into your home, so shut them away, out of sight and beyond their reach if you can.

Our tips on beating garden burglars
1. Don't tempt the thieves in, put away your garden tools, paddling pool, trampoline and bikes at the end of the day
2. Lock your sheds and out-buildings, replace any rusty padlocks.
3. Close gates and repair damaged fences - deterrents are sometimes the best prevention.
4. Hide or cover bulky items which can't be locked away, such as large gas barbecues and picnic benches.
5. Lock up ladders and secure wheelie bins - they are perfect for giving burglars a leg up into the rest of your home!

And after all that, remember that there’s still a good chance that Jack Frost might return. So as well as protecting your property, it might be worth putting a light blanket, some sacking or a garden fleece around your most delicate plants.
