If you're thinking of retiring early, you need to make sure that you've built up a pension fund large enough to see you through a long retirement. We've developed a retirement income calculator that can tell you how much income you could get from your pension fund and what kind of annuity options may be suitable for you.

You also need to bear in mind that, in most cases you can't usually take your retirement benefits before you reach your 55th birthday. To find out if you are eligible to take your benefits before these dates speak to your financial adviser. If you don't have an adviser, you can visit www.unbiased.co.uk or call us on 0800 068 4076. We can only advise on our own products.

Things to consider:

  • How much will you need?

Your retirement could last for more than forty years. You need to think about several things when you consider whether you can afford to retire now, including:

    • Your goals and how you will be able to achieve them
    • Whether you will be able to cope with any unexpected outgoings if you retire early
    • How inflation and the rising cost of living will affect your income over the coming years.
  • Can you afford it?

Use our retirement income calculator to find out.

  • What’s the best option for me?

Choosing how to fund your retirement is a big decision, so you need to be sure that you choose the right option for you. We can help you do that. Read more about ways to fund your retirement.

  • Help protect your family from a large tax bill

If your estate is worth more than the current inheritance tax threshold of £325,000 for 2011/2012 and 2012/2013, you should talk to your financial adviser about inheritance tax planning. If you don't, your family may be left facing a large tax bill when you die. If you don't have an adviser, you can visit www.unbiased.co.uk or call us on 0800 068 4076. • Check what happens if you change your retirement date

If you change your retirement date, there's a chance that it may affect the value of your retirement fund. You should talk to your pension provider to find out what could happen before you make your decision. If you have a pension fund with Aviva, give us a call on 0800 533 5195.
