Landlords reminded of gas safety responsibilities

Forty two people have died in the UK from carbon monoxide related incidents over the past 12 months, and a further 177 have suffered chronic after-effects such as brain damage.

These figures were highlighted today ahead of an expected "seasonal rise" in the number of carbon monoxide (CO) related deaths and incidents in Britain, as heating systems and fires are re-lit for the autumn.

The Carbon Monoxide Consumer Awareness Alliance (COCAA) said it was also launching a fresh campaign to highlight the dangers of CO. Among its targets were individuals and firms providing rented accommodation.

Landlords have a duty to their tenants to ensure that gas appliances are checked by a CORGI registered installer every year.

They must also keep a record of each safety check for 2 years and issue a copy of the safety check to each tenant within 28 days of check being completed, and to any new tenant before they move in.

A leaflet explaining some of the main requirements of landlords, under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, is available from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - see link above/right.

Be CO aware
COCAA was set up this year in response to a report from the All Party Gas Safety Group, with the aim of raising public perception of the dangers of CO poisoning.

It is co-ordinated by gas industry safety watchdog CORGI and its members include representatives from energy suppliers through to carbon monoxide alarm manufacturers, trade associations and victim support groups.

Next week the Alliance is planning to launch a new logo for use by organisations connected with the prevention of CO poisoning - the 'Be Carbon Monoxide Aware' logo will be used on paperwork, packaging, vehicles, posters and adverts.

"Greater visibility for the logo will ensure increased awareness of the potential risk of carbon monoxide poisoning amongst the general public, ultimately helping to save lives," said Dan Caesar, chairman of COCAA.

He added: "Every death from carbon monoxide poisoning is avoidable and we hope the launch of the logo will take us closer to our zero tolerance target."

COCAA is also expected to launch a new information website towards the end of next week - www.becarbonmonoxideaware.com.
