Recent research from the Environment Agency revealed that many businesses in the East Midlands are missing out on water and energy-efficiency cost savings.Although green initiatives can lead to "substantial cost savings for businesses", the organisation said that many are not investing in such measures because of the current economic climate.
The poll of 1,000 UK decision makers found that 35 per cent of firms in the region do not have an environmental or sustainability policy in place.
Just ten per cent of individuals stated that they see saving water as important for reducing their energy usage, although 35 per cent of firms in the East Midlands said they have a water-efficiency policy in place.
Ian Barker, head of Water Resources at the Environment Agency, said: "Whilst we appreciate the strains that company finances are under, the majority of efficiency measures actually reduce costs by reducing water and energy use."
Companies interested in saving money by being environmentally friendly, as well as improving their compliance of legislation and guidelines, may find the Integrated Environmental Management Programme offered by Norwich Union Risk Services to be of assistance.
