A new survey has revealed that 95 per cent of large construction firms will give future preference to subcontractors which can prove their environmental credentials. The study by government environmental organisation NetRegs.gov.uk found that when deciding how to award contracts, large companies with a turnover of more than £10 million will examine the green standards of subcontractors.
Over 85 per cent of large construction organisations have more confidence in greener firms, with 76 per cent citing a lower risk of prosecution as why subcontractors with environmentally-sound practices would be favoured.
Half of those questioned also said that green policies can save money.
If smaller companies want to "differentiate themselves from the competition and be selected in a shrinking market, then they must take their environmental responsibilities seriously and be able to demonstrate the measures they are taking", said Richard Martin, programme manager at NetRegs.gov.uk.
Employers who want to make their company more environmentally attractive could benefit from an Environmental Consultancy from Norwich Union Risk Services.
