Householders and businesses have been told to ensure that all gardening equipment is secured so that they are safe from potential thieves and burglars.Greater Manchester Police (GMP) warned that shovels and spades were used to gain access to properties in Leigh by forcing open doors and windows on four occasions in February 2010.
Inspector Ian Kennedy of the Leigh Neighbourhood Policing Team said that when they are not in use, tools should be kept in sheds or garages which are always locked.
Residents and firms have a responsibility to help the police by making life as difficult as possible for criminals, he said.
"Burglars are always on the lookout for opportunities and leaving a shovel in the garden could provide them with the means to break into your home," Inspector Kennedy added.
According to GMP figures, 75 per cent of people in the conurbation are confident that the police are dealing with anti-social behaviour and other crime issues that matter in their area.
