GMP battles property damage by appointing new officers

Extra police officers have been taken on in Manchester to help stamp out problems affecting businesses and residents in Oldham.

An additional six officers have joined the Oldham West and Oldham East Neighbourhood Policing Teams.

They will be tasked with helping to tackle anti-social behaviour, gang activity and drug dealing in the area.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) revealed that during the first week since the officers were appointed, a teenage graffitist responsible for causing £4,500 of damage to properties across Oldham was tracked down and arrested.

"We are dedicated to tackling the issues that residents tell us are affecting their quality of life and will continue to crackdown on the people who are blighting our communities," said Sergeant Trevor Harrison.

Earlier this month, GMP warned householders to ensure that they lock any unused garden tools away in a secure shed.

It said burglars can use shovels and spades to force open the doors and windows of a property.
