Boris Johnson aims to cut cyclist deaths

A new road safety campaign has been launched with the aim of making the capital a safer place for cyclists.

Unveiled by Boris Johnson and Transport for London (TfL), the Safety Action Plan has highlighted the types of incident on the road which are most likely to have serious consequences for bike riders.

These include collisions with heavy goods vehicles, which account for more than half of the cyclists killed on the streets of London each year.

Close proximity collisions - in which cyclists and other road users fail to give each other enough space - have been identified as another major problem.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said spring is likely to encourage an increasing number of people to take to their bikes in the capital.

"I want each and every one of those people to be as safe as possible and for thousands more to join them," he added.

Earlier this month, road safety minister Paul Clark launched a £3.5 million THINK! campaign aimed at reducing the number of motorcyclist deaths on roads across the country.
