Govt issues £2.6m flood protection grant

Householders in England will have the opportunity to benefit from a £2.6 million worth of grants for flood protection measures.

The money will be allocated to 34 schemes in areas which are at a high risk of flooding and will enable 532 properties to benefit from better flood defences.

These will include air brick covers, door guards, floor boards and storm porches.

It is the second phase of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs scheme. In the initial stage, £3 million was made available to local authorities to protect up to 293 residences.

Environment minister Huw Irranca-Davies said that England must be prepared for more "extreme weather" in the future.

"We have been taking action on a range of fronts to protect against the heart-breaking damage and destruction that can be caused by floods," he added.

Residents in north-east Scotland have also benefitted from flood protection measures in recent times.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency rolled out an early warning scheme last month, which could help around 2,000 homes and businesses in the area.
