Night-time deliveries can 'cut costs and carbon emissions'

Carrying out deliveries at night could help haulage firms save money and cut their carbon emissions.

By taking to the roads during busy periods, trucks are increasing traffic volumes even further, which in turn is having a negative impact on the environment, claimed transport minister Paul Clark.

He expressed confidence that by making their deliveries at night-time, hauliers can not just benefit themselves in terms of budget savings, but also help to tackle the problem of urban congestion and make their services more reliable.

And Mr Clark said that steps can be taken to ensure operating through the night does not impact on the lives of householders across the country.

Thanks to quiet delivery technology and techniques, he said: "A balance can be found between protecting residents and relaxing curfews for a range of locations and store types."

His comments were made in a speech at the Freight Transport Association's Urban Logistics Conference.

Other matters discussed at the talks included ways for hauliers to ensure safe deliveries and vehicle movements.
