Businesses turning to CCTV analysis technology, says BSIA

More businesses are turning to the use of security technology which automatically analyses images from CCTV cameras.

According to a study carried out by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), the measure - which is known as Video Content Analysis (VCA) - is now provided by 80 per cent of its members.

Furthermore, a quarter of security products featured in the poll are supplied with VCA.

The sectors most likely to make use of VCA are transport and retail, with the technology also proving popular with aviation firms, utilities companies and local authorities.

BSIA noted that the technology has a wide range of uses, ranging from the detection of intruders, wrongly-parked vehicles and abandoned packages to measuring the number of people entering or leaving a certain area.

"VCA technology is now being applied more often in an assortment of businesses," said Pauline Norstrom, chairman of the BSIA's CCTV section.

VSA could be useful in ensuring the security, health and safety of lone workers - a matter which the organisation recently said should be of utmost importance to employers.
