MSP urges businesses to operate sustainably

Businesses in Scotland have been advised that it is in their best interests to make themselves as eco-friendly as possible.

Highlands and Islands MSP Robin Gibson - who will be hosting the forthcoming Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland (Vibes) Awards 2010 - said it makes sense for firms to operate in a sustainable manner.

Any company or organisation north of the border has the opportunity to take advantage of the country's "huge" potential for green energy production and consumption, he remarked.

As well as giving them the opportunity to reduce their outgoings, Mr Gibson pointed out that sustainable businesses can help Scotland meet its strict targets on emissions reductions.

He added this will help to make a "cleaner and better world in which to live, as well as instilling a new way of thinking and living in the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders in Scotland".

Earlier this month, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency revealed that two former Vibes winners have been shortlisted for the 2010 European Business Awards for the Environment.
