Penzance could be 'at risk of flash flooding'

Penzance has been highlighted as being at potential risk from flash floods in the future.

According to officials at the Environment Agency (EA), the Cornish town could be susceptible to "extreme flash flooding".

Consequently, the EA called on Penzance Town Council to draw up a Community Flood Response Plan (CFRP) detailing ways in which the body will prepare for any future risk.

A CFRP is designed to help people deal with flooding by encouraging them to ready themselves before the event occurs, while also aiming to reduce any risk to life which may exist while it is ongoing.

EA spokesman Lynsey Wilcox said the organisation is working with communities and professional partners across Cornwall to manage flood response plans.

She added: "We aim to ensure that people living and working in Penzance understand what flash flooding is and what it means."

Last year, the town of Morpeth received assistance from the EA in creating and implementing its own CFRP.

Measures included the construction of an evacuation track for residents in the High Stanners area.
