Businesses warned over opportunist thieves

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned businesses and homeowners to be wary of the threat posed by thieves during the summer months.

While Britain is expected to enjoy a long, hot summer, the organisation has advised that it can be an opportune time for burglars to strike.

Leaving the windows of homes or commercial properties open can represent an invitation to some people and the 78,000 domestic burglary claims made last year proves that point.

Whether at work or at home, people are urged to keep security in mind and ensure their premises are not an easy target.

The ABI's tips for making properties safer during the summer holidays include storing ladders and tools that could be used to gain entry in a secure place.

In addition, if a property is to be left unoccupied for a prolonged period of time, it should be monitored either by CCTV or a near neighbour.
