Aviva works with The Big Issue to raise awareness

29 September 2010

Aviva have teamed up with The Big Issue to produce a special one-off edition of the magazine called The Little Issue, which will turn the spotlight on the fact that 100,000 children are at risk on UK streets, as part of the Street to School programme. 50,000 copies of the magazine will be distributed in UK towns and cities free inside The Big Issue from September 27 with another 50,000 being distributed to Aviva and Railway Children staff, customers and business partners.

The idea for The Little Issue was suggested by Gary Smith, an Aviva employee based at their offices in Perth, Scotland - and when 43-year-old Gary suggested producing some leaflets to promote a company “Sleep Out” outside the insurer’s Pitheavlis office, little did he know his idea would end up going nationwide.

Gary said: "It was just an idea to promote the Sleep Out but it’s brilliant to see what an impact it’s made – The Big Issue really embraced the idea and hopefully people all over the country will read all about what we’re trying to do to tackle this issue. It may be called The Little Issue but with a bit of luck it will make a big difference.”

John Bird, founder and editor in chief of The Big Issue, also said: “I know how it feels to be a kid on the streets - it’s terrifying - so I’m pleased we’ve been given the opportunity to focus on this highly vulnerable group. We hope that through reading The Little Issue people learn more about the issue and inspired to do something to help.”

You can download an online version of the magazine (PDF 3,560KB).
