What is legal expense cover?

As standard, your Motor insurance covers your legal liability if you injure someone or damage their property in an accident that was your fault.

However, if you’re involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you might want to claim for financial losses and compensation from the other driver who was to blame. In this situation, you may have to foot the bill yourself unless you have Motor Legal cover added to your insurance policy.

Legal expenses in these situations could run into thousands of pounds, which for many people would be difficult to find.

By adding Motor Legal cover to your policy, you can take some of that worry away.

What does the cover offer me?

We’ll provide you with legal protection to pay lawyers’ costs up to £100,000 if you or your passengers choose to make a claim for compensation against another driver. The lawyer must believe that your case is more likely than not to succeed.

As part of your Motor Legal claim, we’ll pay to recover financial losses such as:

  • travel expenses
  • your policy excesses
  • compensation for personal injury or death

You won’t be able to claim on your Motor Legal cover if the accident was your fault.

If you’re accused of or have committed an offence under the road traffic laws (e.g. speeding) while using your vehicle and the offence isn’t related to drink, drugs or parking, Motor Legal cover will pay lawyer’s costs up to £10,000 to help defend your legal rights.

You’ll also get access to a Motor Legal helpline, based in the UK and open 24 hours a day, that provides confidential legal advice on any legal matter relating to the use of your vehicle.

Can I add Motor Legal cover to any Aviva car insurance policy?
