How using telematics could help you pay lower motor insurance premiums

Technology these days is making it easier for you to pay a fairer price for your car insurance premiums. After all, if you’re a safe driver, why should you pay for other people’s bad driving?

In the motor insurance industry, this is known as telematics. It works by having a device in your car that will track your driving and monitor your style, such as cornering, braking and accelerating. The device could be a small box or simply an app on your smartphone. As you drive, the app or device gathers information on your driving, building up a more rounded picture the further you drive. After a certain number of miles, it will assess your performance and calculate a score, which your insurance company can use to personalise your premium.

It may sound a little like big brother is watching, but telematics can be great for you if you want to do all you can to take control of your insurance premiums. It’s especially useful if it’s likely you’ll fall into one of the groups of drivers who could face high premiums to insure your car, such as:

  • new or inexperienced drivers
  • drivers with a high annual mileage
  • young drivers

Telematics could help you prove you are a safe driver according to the device, which will help bring your premiums down.

Safer drivers get money off with Aviva Drive

With Aviva Drive, you simply have to download the free app and make sure you take your smartphone with you when you go for a drive. The app works using your phone’s GPS, so you don’t have to fiddle with it to use it.

Once you’ve driven 200 miles, you’ll get an individual driving score out of 10, based on things like your cornering, braking and accelerating.

If you score 7.1 or more out of 10 on Aviva Drive, you could save money on your premiums. We’ll use your score to calculate your personalised discount. On average, safer drivers scoring 7.1 or more save £170 on Aviva comprehensive car insurance. In face, we expect 40% of safer drivers to get this saving or more.*

The table shows the levels of discount you could earn based on your driving score and premium.

Aviva Drive discounts apply from 1 December 2015. We review the discount quarterly, so it may change.

You don’t have to drive 200 miles in one go, so you can follow your progress on the app and track your route with the built-in map function.  The app will track your driving over a number of trips by detecting movement using your phone’s GPS. And because one of the cardinal rules of safe driving is not using your phone behind the wheel, the app collects the data without you having to touch your phone while you drive.

To make it more fun, you can also collect badges for your safe driving skills, driving at specific times and reviewing the app.

You can use the Aviva Drive app to get a quote for car insurance whenever you like. To see if you’ll get a personalised discount, you’ll need to drive 200 miles to get your individual score.

If you’re already an Aviva customer, you can download the app and get your score. When you’re ready to renew, give us a call on 0345 030 7575 and we’ll use your Aviva Drive score to calculate your new premium.

*Based on policies bought direct from Aviva between January and September 2016. 40% scoring 7.1+ saved £170 or more. Discount is available on first car per policy and depends on score and price (minimum £200). Discount doesn’t apply to optional extras. You need a compatible handset and you may have to pay data charges.
