Gender Directive - The impact on PMI

Published: 19 Sep 2012

A ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) means that from 21 December 2012 insurance companies are no longer able to use a person’s gender as a factor when calculating the cost and benefits of their insurance.

How does this affect our private health insurance products?

Gender is just one of the factors that we used in calculating the price of our Healthier Solutions and Speedy Diagnostics private health insurance products. To comply with the ECJ ruling we are removing gender as a ‘rating factor’ from our premiums.

New business

• New policies with a start date on or after 6 November will have gender neutral pricing. Standard quotes are valid for 30 days, so gender neutral quotes will be available from 7 October 2012.
Existing business

• Existing policies will 'pick up' the gender neutral renewal pricing at the next renewal date from 6 November 2012. The first renewal packs with gender neutral pricing will start being issued from 2 October 2012.

The impact of gender neutral prices will depend on each customer's individual circumstances. There is no immediate change to customers' current insurance cover and the way we manage new and existing business.

Regular updates

In the lead up to 21 December 2012 we'll be adding more information to the HealthcareZone.
