Morley Fund Management, the UK-based asset management arm ofAviva plc, has re-affirmed its commitment to independent researchand active engagement by formally appointing Ross Courtier as Headof UK Activism.
As one of the UK’s largest investors, owning approximately2% of the UK stock market, Morley has a long track record ofactively engaging with UK companies in which it invests. RossCourtier is Morley’s longest serving UK fund manager, with 18years of UK fund management experience and works closely with AnitaSkipper, Head of Corporate Governance, in seeking an activedialogue with quoted companies. The new role is effective from 28October and reports to Mike Bishop, Head of Pan EuropeanEquities.
With the support of a team of 18 equity analysts, five creditanalysts and a dedicated nine strong socially responsibleinvestment team, Ross Courtier works with the boards of companieswith strategic and financial issues. The ultimate aim is to improvecompany performance, resulting in better returns for Morley’sretail and institutional clients.
Commenting on the new role, Gerald Holtham, Chief InvestmentOfficer at Morley Fund Management, said: “Morley has been aleader in corporate governance in the UK since the 1970s and thecreation of the role of Head of UK Activism formalises a longstanding engagement function and strengthens an important dimensionof the Morley investment process.

In 2001 Morley became the first fund manager to include arequirement for large UK companies to publish environmental reportsin its voting policy.
