- £2.8 million of assets returned to fishermen in 2007
Norwich Union's "Find the fisherman" campaign has now been running for over a year and experienced phenomenal success. The campaign was launched in January 2007 to help contact those fishermen who worked on the fishing fleets around the UK during the 1960s and 70s who had not claimed pensions that are rightfully theirs.
Since the launch of the campaign, Norwich Union has received around 10,000 telephone enquiries from the public regarding fisherman pensions. It has traced the policies of over 6,000 fishermen and returned £2.8 million to customers or their families.
Cathryn Riley, chief operating officer of Norwich Union, said: "We started the "Find the fisherman" campaign over a year ago with high expectations, but returning almost £3 million to customers has been an even greater success than anticipated.
"The response we received from the public to this campaign has been fantastic and it helped us a great deal. We also made extensive use of tracing agencies to locate people who changed address without updating their contact details.
"We learned some very valuable lessons from this campaign and we will be using the experience to help us return more unclaimed assets to our customers over time.
"Unclaimed assets are common across the industry and we strongly believe that all companies should be taking steps to get this money back to its rightful owners."
Norwich Union launched a separate initiative to return £40m of unclaimed assets to 40,000 customers on 5 November 2007. Customers can begin to trace a policy by completing a form available from either 0800 1582465 or http://www.norwichunion.com/existing-customer/trace-policies/.
