No 1 – plan ahead
They say that a healthy mind leads to a healthy lifestyle and a healthier body. We think that’s true for the most part. Staying healthy is about taking a positive attitude to your wellness – and it starts with positive thinking.
Emotionally, the transition from full or even part-time employment to retirement can be daunting so think carefully about the extra time you’re going to have, in advance. Think positively – what can you do, where can you go, who can you see? If you’re not sure, then be excited – the world’s your oyster and your choices are going to be unlimited!
No 2 – phone a friend
Unless you’ve filled your social diary for months in advance, it’s likely that when you ‘leave work’, you’ll see fewer people on a daily basis. But if you do make an effort to contact people you know, then you’ll get the support, feel the enthusiasm, and perhaps find the motivation to pro-actively look after your health – possibly even together.
No 3 – pick a new routine
If you’ve been going to work every day, then you’ve been accustomed to a set routine. Now is the time to break some bad habits and make some great promises to yourself. Set up a new routine that’s geared to being active; get up and exercise during the time you’d usually get ready for work. Think about eating healthily, but enjoy the extra time you have during the week to prepare meals properly, perhaps. – and book an MOT.
No 4 – pencil in an MOT
Yes, pencil it in now – pick a week to make an appointment with your GP, who’ll give you personalized advice on how to stay healthy as you get older. We say this, because while it’s relatively easy to research exercises and healthy diets, it’s important to find a stable platform emotionally and mentally, and your GP is in a god position to offer practical advice on dealing with the ups and downs that those close to you may not see quite so easily.
