Journey - Important Considerations

Driving is a very expressive human activity; it's also skills based and governed by laws. Because we're only human, it doesn't matter how good a driver you or your employees are, or how law abiding, the driver's skill and concentration can always be outwitted by someone else's mistake. So every opportunity to minimise that possibility and other risks encountered in the course of a work-related journey should be taken.

Before even considering making a journey, have a look at the journey questions and make a decision.

Before undertaking any journey, ask yourself.

  • Is the journey really necessary? Could you use the telephone, email or videoconferencing as an alternative? There is usually a substantial cost saving in using this technology.
  • Are you satisfied that drivers will not be put at risk from fatigue caused by driving excessive distances without a break?
  • Can you eliminate long journeys or reduce them by considering other transport methods i.e. rail or plane?
  • Can you make an overnight stay, rather than having to complete long journeys at the end of the working day?

Driving is a time consuming, costly and risky business and every opportunity to avoid should be considered.
