Corporate Responsibility

Climate

Climate change is the most serious environmental threat that the world faces, and Aviva is committed to playing its part in addressing the problem.

We are actively looking to reduce the impact we have on climate change, as well as our wider environmental footprint. We have become carbon neutral, including offsetting our carbon emissions and are one of the first worldwide organisations to do so. We are actively looking to reduce our energy use, including examining transport use across the organisation. We are also seeking to reduce waste.

We have a number of initiatives in place to deliver on our commitment to the environment.

Energy use

Energy use

At the end of 2006, Aviva, became the first insurer to go carbon neutral. At Aviva, we buy all our electricity from renewable sources and target energy efficiency in our electricity use, building management and transport. We have installed green notice boards in most main buildings to show current energy consumption and targeted reductions.

Property management

The refurbishment of the island site in Norwich, together with new buildings Willow House and Reed House (which came on line during 2006 at Broadland Business Park, Norwich), have given Aviva the opportunity to ensure environmental efficiencies are incorporated in both the design and the management of the buildings. In 2007 we will ensure this focus is carried forward to all our other new and refurbished buildings.

Paper use

During 2006, 80% of the copier paper used across Aviva was recycled. This paper is now available to all UK based staff.

We are currently looking at using less paper with policy documentation and have been working with Williams Lea, our volume document printers for outgoing customer policies and mail drops, to use a paper with recycled content.

Waste management

Waste management

All Aviva sites have recycling facilities for paper/cardboard/cans/plastic bottles plastic cups. We also recycle toner cartridges and CDs/DVDs. In 2006, we increased our recycling at all locations and introduced plastic bottle recycling nationally. We also removed paper hand towels from all locations replacing them with roller hand towels and/or electric hand dryers using 100% green electricity. This reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill by an estimated 90 tonnes annually.

Our maintenance contractors recycle fluorescent tubes and our cleaners use bio-degradable cleaning products.

Travel and transport

In 2006 Aviva recruited a UK Travel Plan manager to build up and promote 'Green Travel Plans' for all UK-based colleagues. Shuttle mini-bus services are provided to our larger out-of-town locations to encourage staff to leave their cars behind and we support National Liftshare day and Bike2work week.

We have also launched 26 new suites of managed meeting rooms at our Norwich headquarters to encourage colleagues to use in-house facilities rather than making unnecessary journeys. These meeting rooms have full video and telephone conference facilities, large conference rooms and leisure areas for relaxation together with training suites. Though currently only available in Surrey Street, Norwich, we plan to roll these out throughout the company.
