HPI acquires warranty mileage data from Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover

Article date: 17 July 2006

HPI has upped its campaign against “clocking” with anew agreement to receive warranty mileage information directly fromFord, Jaguar and Land Rover.

This latest data acquisition will see the company’s NationalMileage Register (NMR) increase by more than seven million highquality mileage readings.

The NMR – the UK’s largest database of mileagereadings, processing about two million checks a year - is designedto protect both dealers and consumers from mileage discrepancies.Daniel Burgess, from HPI automotive, says: “Clocking andundisclosed odometer changes are still a major concern for theindustry, with many dealers still facing legal action for notinvestigating and reporting the correct mileage. Capturing mileagedata is the only way the industry can hope to eradicate the sale ofclocked vehicles by a minority of unscrupuloustraders.”

The NMR now holds in excess of 89 million mileages on the database, collated from many sources including the DVLA, BVRLA, motormanufacturers, warranty companies, dealers and consumers. Mileages, taken at the time of any warranty work carried out by manufacturersand their dealer network, have proven to be a very accurate sourceof mileage data.

Daniel Burgess adds: “BMW UK has been providing us withregular batches of warranty mileage data for some years, and withFord, Jaguar and Land Rover data being added to the NationalMileage Register on a monthly basis, the data we hold will beenhanced. As a result of our commitment to providing the highestquality and depth of vehicle provenance data, we are urging thetrade to record and check mileages at every opportunity.

“The HPI NMR Investigation Service already offers dealersinvaluable protection, helping them to avoid prosecution forselling clocked vehicles and securing the quality and value oftheir stock.

“Ford Motor Company is working with us to help the industryoperate best practice for the benefit of consumers and dealersalike. We’re also in discussions with a number of other motormanufacturers regarding the provision of warranty mileage data withthe aim to make this quality of data provision a standard acrossthe industry.”
