Learn more about what Optimum can cover
As Optimum offers bespoke private medical insurance, you can choose exactly what you’d like to cover and what you’d like to exclude from your policy. More information about how you can adapt your PMI, as well as common exclusions, can be found in our brochure.
Support your employees can rely on
When your employees aren't feeling their best, Optimum offers them expert support when they most need it. This includes extensive cancer care and direct access to both mental health and musculoskeletal treatment through our managed pathways.
Cancer cover
Cancer care is included in our core cover for Optimum, and there are three levels of cover you can choose from.
That means you have the flexibility to offer the cancer cover that suits your members’ needs and your budget. While all levels cover diagnosis and treatment, higher levels can include more high-cost treatments, and more.
Whichever level you choose, employees will get:
- access to diagnosis and treatment, helping to put their minds at ease
- an experienced and dedicated cancer claims team to support them every step of the way
- a range of additional support to help them throughout their cancer journey and beyond
- unlimited access to talking therapies

Mental Health Pathway
Our Mental Health Pathway offers your employees access to talking therapy and counselling, without the need for a GP referral. When they call us, we'll put them in touch with our third-party clinical provider for assessment and treatment. Outpatient limits don't apply to Mental Health Pathway.
We offer a wide range of specialists through our network of professionals. This includes clinical psychologists, talking therapists, psychiatrists and counsellors.
Anyone over the age of 11 who’s covered on the policy can use Mental Health Pathway.
BacktoBetter
A musculoskeletal condition – affecting back, neck, muscles or joints – can get worse quickly if not treated. When employees call our BacktoBetter service, they’ll be referred to one of our third-party clinical providers who’ll suggest the right treatment pathway for them.
If physiotherapy is recommended, we’ll pay for it when it’s needed. No need for a GP referral.
Anyone over the age of 11 who’s covered on the policy can use BacktoBetter.

Looking to offer more to your employees?
If Optimum isn’t the right fit for your business, Optimum Referral or a Private Medical Trust could be. They can help you offer a further range of medical care for your employees.
Optimum Referral
A healthcare product that draws upon our breadth of clinical and customer service expertise, Optimum Referral delivers quality, sustainable healthcare tailored to you and your members’ needs.
With an open referral approach, it gives us the chance to add real value to your members. We use our clinical knowledge and independent quality data to signpost them to the right treatment provider for them. And we help to keep private medical insurance sustainable by making sure your healthcare is procured effectively and efficiently.
Private Medical Trusts
If you have 500 or more employees, you may choose to fund your corporate private healthcare with a healthcare trust. A healthcare trust can give you more control over the type of medical benefits you provide, as you can set the rules of the trust. And we can provide the day-to-day admin and management of the trust, including claims assessment and payment, so you don't have to.
Because it’s not an insurance contract, choosing a healthcare trust comes with funding benefits, like not paying Insurance Premium Tax on the claims fund. It can also provide Stop Loss Insurance to protect your company’s liability by absorbing the exposure to costs above a certain level.
Why choose Aviva for your private medical insurance?
Through our policies and products, and the wellbeing support that comes with them, we’re making sure you can be there for your employees, without having to worry about your business.
It’s not just about paying claims, it’s about giving you access to the right practical, emotional, and physical support at the right time.
Because that makes all the difference – for your employees, and your business.
Clinical excellence is in our DNA
We employ clinicians whose expertise informs every aspect of our work, from creating propositions, pricing products and analysing their impact, to monitoring our claims process and managing our relationships with providers.
