Diabetes patients or those suffering with blood sugar problems have been told that weight loss surgery is a particularly effective form of treatment.
New research by doctors at Imperial College London analysed the medical records of 209 people with type 2 diabetes.
They found that in 41 per cent of cases the patients achieved remission following the surgery, with gastric bypasses being the most successful procedure.
"It's clear that weight loss surgery, particularly gastric bypass, has a significant beneficial effect on glucose control," said lead investigator Dr Carel le Roux.
He explained that the surgery may not mean that sufferers will need to cease taking medication, but it was clear that a dual approach to treatment achieved the most effective results.
According to the World Health Organization, diabetes is set to become the seventh most deadly disease in the world by 2030, with the number of deaths rising by 50 per cent in the next ten years.
