What is learner driver insurance?

Learner driver insurance is a type of short-term car insurance that covers you while you learn to drive. Along with a provisional licence in your back pocket and a tattered copy of the Highway Code by your bed, it’s important to make sure you’re covered as you rack up the hours practicing for your driving test. This is where learner driver insurance comes in. You could use it if:

  • You’ve already got the keys to your own car and want to learn to drive in it with the help of an instructor, friend or family member.
  • You’re swerving a professional instructor in favour of being taught by a friend or family member in their own car.
  • You want to polish your driving skills outside of your official lessons with your instructor in a car that doesn’t belong to them.

Supervising a learner driver

The people who can supervise a learner driver include professional instructors, friends or family members. But if you want someone to supervise you when you practice, by law they must:

  • be over 21 (with our Learner Driver Insurance from DayInsure they must be aged between 25 and 75)
  • be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in. For example, they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car
  • have had their full driving licence for 3 years.

Are you eligible?

To get Learner Driver Insurance, you, your car and your supervising driver must meet the following criteria.

As the driver, you must:

  • Be a UK resident aged 17 – 35
  • Hold a provisional licence with no penalty points, motoring convictions or offences

Your supervising driver must:

  • Be aged between 25 and 75 years old
  • Have held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years

The vehicle you’re driving must:

  • Also be insured under a separate annual policy (unless you are the Registered Keeper of the car)
  • Be worth less than £40,000
  • Have no more than 7 seats (including the driver’s seat)

  • Night-time cover
You’re only covered between the hours of 6am and midnight (unless you are the registered keeper of the car)
  • Uninsured cars
The vehicle you drive must also be insured under a separate annual motor insurance policy (unless you are the registered keeper of the car)
  • Full driving licence
All cover ends as soon as you pass your driving test
