Consultation and Communication

Consultation and communication is covered by several pieces of legislation but the simple message is that you should:

  • Inform employees about:

          •    workplace hazards
          •    The measures to control and reduce risks associated with workplace hazards
          •    Rules and procedures

  • Educate employees in any procedures and systems of work introduced to reduce risk
  • Consult employees about:

          •    Changes that have an effect on health and safety such as the introduction of new plant and machinery or   training requirements
          •    Arrangements for nominating competent persons and/or securing competent advice

Interested in setting up a Health and Safety Committee?

A committee provides a useful forum for discussions on subjects such as workplace conditions and hazards, progress on health and safety improvement, the results of accident investigations, the effectiveness of training programmes etc.

An effective committee will have representation from all parts of the organisation. If the firm has a trade union then employees can appoint safety representatives who become the employees’ representatives on any committee. If these safety reps request that a committee be formed the employer must agree to the request.
