You and your pension across your career
Depending on where you’re at in your career journey, you might have different priorities for your pension savings. We've included some helpful information on what you could be thinking about for your pension savings at different stages of your career.
Early career
Retirement may seem a lifetime away, so it might be tempting to put off thinking about your pension. But the sooner you start saving, the better your chance of enjoying the future you want. Every little bit of money you put in now has more time to grow into something bigger for later.
It's important to understand what pension and contribution levels your current employer offers, and what kind of retirement these, alongside any other pensions you have, could give you. You could use our Pension Calculator to see if you're on track, and get a head start on your journey to retirement.
Mid-career
By now, it’s likely that you’ve had a few different employers and you’re entering your prime earning years. At home, you may well even have a mortgage and a family.
You’ve probably had few workplace pensions at this point, so you may need to take a more active role in managing them. That could mean increasing your contributions or combining your pensions. You can use our Shape my future tool to help plan your savings around the retirement you want.
Pre-retirement
Retirement is just around the corner, but there are a few more decisions to think about when it comes to your pension to make sure you’re on track for the retirement you’ve been dreaming of.
Retirement
You’ve worked hard to build up your retirement savings, but there’s still more you can do to make your pension work as hard as it can.
You have options on how you use your pension, taking it all at once or as and when, choosing a guaranteed income for life, or a combination of options. You can also leave your retirement savings where they are until your ready to access them. If you choose an option where some or all of your money is still invested, remember that its value may fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invested.
When you start to think about taking your pension savings, you should shop around different providers for the best deal and to ensure which ever option you take meets your needs and circumstances.
Before you make any decisions, it makes sense to talk to your financial adviser. If you don’t have an adviser, we can help put you in touch with one.
