Understand the level of risk first: Investing offers the potential for better returns than cash savings over the long term (5+ years), but there are risks. The value of your investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you’ve paid in.
Tax benefits are based on personal circumstances and are subject to change.

How can I start investing?
Anyone can start investing. You can start with a small amount of money, depending on the type of investment product you go for. If you’re wondering how to start investing, then an adviser could help you with your investment planning.
Why have my funds dropped in value?
With any investment funds, the value of them can rise and fall at any time. This is caused by the type of funds you’re invested in. For company shares, these are linked to the performance of the stock market, which can go through periods of volatility. With fixed income assets such as bonds, these carry interest rate risk. This means the price of these assets might fall when interest rates go up.
Investment advice could help balance your portfolio across different types of funds, and help you navigate market volatility.
What value will my investments have in the future?
It’s impossible to say how your investments will do in the long run, because they’re so dependent on things like market changes and inflation. Your financial adviser will help you plan for the future. You can also use our investment calculator to help you get a rough picture of how things might look.
Will I have to pay Capital Gains Tax?
You can always ask your financial adviser if you’re unsure about capital gains tax. They’ll be able to help you work out whether you have anything to pay. If you're trading or selling any of your investments outside of a tax-efficient wrapper, such as an ISA, you might have to pay Capital Gains Tax. Use our Capital Gains Tax calculator to help you work out whether you’ll need to pay anything.
