Cancelling your home insurance – What you should know
Discover what you need to know if cancelling your home insurance
Key points
- Check your policy documents for cancellation terms, fees, and procedures - these vary by insurer.
- You have a 14-day cooling-off period to cancel for a refund, though charges may apply for time covered.
- Cancelling after renewal or mid-term may incur fees and affect multi-policy discounts.
- Speak to your insurer first - alternatives like adjusting cover or financial support may be available.
You can find all the information you need to know about cancelling your home insurance in the policy documents provided by your insurer. You can also contact them directly to discuss your options and understand the implications of cancelling your cover.
If you’re considering cancelling your home insurance, here are some important details to think about and potential issues to be aware of before making a decision.
Cooling-off period and cancellation fees
It’s important to check your policy terms, when you take out a home insurance policy. You’re entitled to a statutory cooling-off period of 14 days from the date you purchase your policy or receive your documents (whichever is later). During this time, you can cancel your policy and will be eligible for a refund, provided no claim has been made. If the cover has already started, you would be charged for any time you were covered.
Cancelling after the cooling-off period
You can cancel your home insurance policy at any time. If you cancel after the cooling-off period, you may need to pay a cancellation fee and any charges for the time you were covered (calculated on a pro-rata basis). Full details of cancellation terms and applicable charges are outlined in your policy documents.
For Aviva Signature policies, this includes a £29.00 cancellation fee (plus Insurance Premium Tax) in addition to the pro-rata deduction.
Cancelling at renewal
Your policy may be set to automatically renew, which means that unless you inform your insurer, your cover will continue at renewal and payment will be automatically taken.
This information is usually shown on your renewal invitation. If you’re unsure, it’s important to check with your insurance provider to understand their renewal process.
Losing customer benefits
You may be entitled to a discount if you have more than one policy with your insurer, like car insurance and home insurance. If you cancel your home insurance, you could lose that discount from your next renewal. If you pay monthly, this means the discount will remain until your renewal date. In this situation, you should contact your insurer to find out what happens if you cancel your home insurance and the options available to you.
Alternatives to cancelling
Before cancelling your insurance, speak to your insurance provider to see if there are any alternatives. For example, you might be able to change your covers if your needs have changed.
Before you change your cover, it’s important to make sure it will still meet your needs and covers everything you want it to.
If you’re thinking about cancelling because you’re experiencing financial difficulties, speak to your insurer first to check what support might be available to you.
