Commonly, pick-up trucks were used for business, hauling equipment, or making deliveries. Now they’ve become more popular as everyday vehicles. The specific insurance you need will be based on the purpose of use with your pick-up, whether it be business or personal.
What type of insurance do I need?
Personal van insurance
If you plan on using your pick-up as just your everyday vehicle, getting you to and from work, or helping you reach and explore some mountains.
Business van insurance
From hauling tools, to transporting stock if you’re using your pick-up for work then business will be the insurance for you.
What level of cover do I need for my pick-up truck?
Comprehensive
Comprehensive van insurance provides extensive coverage for a range of incidents. This includes accidents, theft, and damage. It goes beyond basic protection provided under third party, fire and theft, offering a broader safety net for your van, giving you peace of mind on the road.
Third party, fire and theft
Third-party, fire and theft van insurance covers damage you cause to others. It also helps protect your van from fire or theft. It's an option offering a balance between protection and cost. It's suitable for those seeking essential coverage, but not comprehensive insurance.

Pick-up trucks explained
What is a pick-up truck?
A pick-up truck is a light, commercial vehicle with an enclosed cab and an open, flat area on the back. It can be useful for carrying tools, equipment or goods.
Can I insure a pick-up truck with Aviva?
Yes. We offer van insurance for pick-up trucks, whether you use yours for personal or business reasons.
Personal van insurance is for everyday use, like hobbies or DIY.
Business van insurance is for work-related use, like transporting tools, making deliveries, or running a trade.
How is a pick-up truck classified in the UK?
Although we classify pick-up trucks under 'van' insurance, they aren't all recognised as vans by law.
From 6 April 2025, most double cab pick-ups (with four doors and two rows of seats) will be classed as cars for tax purposes. For VAT, it depends on payload capacity:
