Worried about GP and hospital wait times?

Health on hold? Not anymore. With health insurance, you can have access to the treatment you need when you need it.

It's fair to say health insurance is in the news for all the right reasons.

Going private is a personal choice, but easy access to the treatment you need at a time that suits you is not just convenient. It can also reduce the days or even weeks of worrying while you wait for a diagnosis.

Private healthcare services could get you back to your best.

So, how long can you expect to wait for private health treatment?

See a GP quickly

The first port of call for your health is usually the GP. While you can still speak to your regular GP for a referral, you might get a faster appointment with the Aviva Digital GP* mobile app. Most appointments are available on the same days as booking. In fact, 96% Footnote [1] of patients who use the app are offered appointments within six hours of their preferred time.

Not tried a virtual GP before? The appointment will be a video call and will last around 15 minutes. Amongst other things, your GP will be able to provide you with private prescriptions, medical advice, and refer you for further investigation or treatment with a specialist if you need it.

So, without having to leave the house, you’ll be able to take the first steps to getting yourself better. You may even be able to sort out your issue during one call.

*Aviva Digital GP is a non-contractual benefit we can change or withdraw at any time.

Waiting times in hospitals

No one likes hanging around, especially when it comes to your health. Fitting your treatment around your life, and not the other way around, can be a major reason why people sign up for private health insurance.

Your health should always be a priority, and with health insurance, you could experience shorter wait times for eligible treatment than if you didn’t go private.

Onward specialist referrals: up to 15 days Step 1 of 3

Often the first step after speaking to your GP will be to speak to a specialist. They’ll assess your needs and determine the next best course of action, referring you for further treatment if you need it.

Diagnostics: up to 23 days Step 2 of 3

Your specialist may recommend diagnostic tests to diagnose or rule out certain conditions that could be causing your symptoms. These tests could include blood tests and imaging tests, such as x-rays or scans.

Surgery: up to 65 days Step 3 of 3

If your specialist advises surgery to treat your condition (for example, to remove cancer or replace a joint), using your health insurance can shorten the amount of time spent waiting, and get you back living life on your terms faster.

Physiotherapy

Bad back? Tennis elbow? Aches and pains can crop up at the most inconvenient times, whether caused by an injury or spending too long hunched over your desk.

It can be tempting to think ‘oh that’ll fix itself eventually’ or ‘I’ll start a yoga class in January’. But if you’re an Aviva health insurance customer, your cover could include access to physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractic treatment to tackle musculoskeletal issues quickly. And that could help you can get back to what you love doing.
