You asked: How do investments work?

With investments, you generally choose which investment funds you want to place your money in. Investment funds are divided into units and your money buys you units in the fund. The fund manager will pool your money with that of other investors and use it to buy assets the fund invests in. The value of your investment will track the performance of the fund. If the fund performs well, the value of the units in the fund will increase and so will the value of your investment. Likewise, if the fund performs poorly, the value of the units in the fund will fall and so will the value of your investment.
