You asked: What does 'basic sum assured' mean?

The basic sum assured is the guaranteed amount upon which regular bonuses are calculated. Once a regular bonus is added it cannot be removed from the policy. The basic sum assured and regular bonuses are guaranteed to be paid at maturity as long as premiums have been paid in full and the policy has not been amended.

This is not applicable to the With Profits Pension Annuity.
