What is Pass Plus?

What is Pass Plus?

The Pass Plus Scheme is a short practical training course for new drivers, who have recently passed the UK standard driving test1. The course aims to enhance existing driving skills, gain further experience and help develop confidence on the road to drive more safely. On completion of the course, new drivers receive a discount on their car insurance from Aviva.

  • The course is either completed over a full day or two half days – spending at least five and a half hours driving, or an hour per module
  • It has to be taken by new drivers within the first year of passing their practical test
  • New drivers must book with a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor (ADI)
  • Prices vary, depending on location and instructor, but usually cost less than £2002
  • Some local councils provide a discount for new learners looking to do the Pass Plus course

What will I learn?

The course is made up of six modules, completed as practice sessions - which cover the following3:

Driving through town

  • Observation, judgement and awareness
  • Vulnerable road users
  • Typical features of urban roads
  • Spatial awareness and clearance to others

Driving through all weather

  • Forward planning and observations
  • Skidding and avoidance
  • Speed and stopping distance
  • Extreme conditions

Driving on rural roads

  • Rural hazards - bends and lanes
  • Overtaking and progress
  • Observation skills

Driving at night

  • Vehicle lighting and use
  • Speed and stopping distance
  • Parking
  • Visibility seeing and reacting safely

Driving on dual carriageways

  • Joining, turning, leaving
  • Overtaking
  • Forward planning and observation

Driving on motorways

  • Forward planning and observations
  • Joining and leaving the motorway
  • Overtaking
  • Breakdown and safety

In exceptional circumstances, if a module cannot be covered during the course, it will be completed as a theory session instead.

How am I graded?

The Pass Plus course doesn’t required a test, but learners will be assessed for each module described above. The learner needs to achieve either an achieved or exceeded standard for all the modules in order to pass4. If a module cannot be covered, then the learner can achieve no higher than an achieved standard, because the driver is unable to demonstrate the skills needed to complete the task.

How can this help me save on my car insurance?

When the driver has completed the Pass Plus course, they’ll receive their Pass Plus certificate; this is required when new drivers are discussing ant potential Pass Plus discount with insurers. Not only could they be saving money on car insurance, but perhaps more importantly, they will have gained valuable new skills and improved confidence for driving independently on the roads.
